Adesegun Olayiwola FATUSI, the President of Society for Adolescent and Young People’s Health in Nigeria, is a Fellow of the West African College of Physicians in Community Health, and Professor of Public Health and Community Medicine at the College of Health Sciences, Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU), Ile-Ife, Nigeria. He worked previously as a Reproductive Health Adviser for the United Nations Population Fund (UNFPA)’s programme in Nigeria (1996-2001). Within the University system, he had previously served as the Head of Community Health Department, the Director of Population and Reproductive Health Programme, the Director of the Institute of Public Health, and Provost of the College of Health Sciences. Among others, he holds the International Masters of Public Health degree from the Hebrew University, Hadassah, Israel (with summa cum laude honours), and is a 2001/2002 Packard-Gates Leadership Fellow at the University of Washington, USA.

He is a leading expert in Sexual, Reproductive, Maternal and Adolescent Health, and is actively engaged in research, training, programme management and policy development at international, national, and sub-national levels. He has led several national research initiatives including the National Study on School Health, Performance Factor Special Study on Reproductive and Child Health, the National AIDS & Reproductive Health Survey, Assessment of Injection Safety and Health Care Waste Management, National Tuberculosis Survey and Follow-Up Study, and Quality of Tuberculosis Study. He was also as the Nigerian Principal Investigator for several international studies, including the Learning-Plus Initiative (on HIV and school health) Family Health and Wealth Study, and the Global Early Adolescent Study. Furthermore, he has served as the lead consultant for the development of several policy-related documents and strategic plans, including those on adolescent health, HIV/AIDS, reproductive and maternal health, and youth development in Nigeria and beyond.

He has served as a consultant to several government agencies as well as international development organisations, including WHO, UNFPA, UNICEF, UNDP, UNAIDS, World Bank, USAID and CDC-funded programmes, and DfID-funded projects. He is currently the Chair of Nigeria’s National Adolescent Health & Development Technical Working Group, Vice President (Sub-Saharan Africa) for the International Association for Adolescent Health (IAAH), and a member of the Lancet Commission on Adolescent Health and Wellbeing.
